Pickin’ For Memory,

it’s getting close!

Hello NKBMA members! Gas prices getting you down? Tired of spending half of your Bluegrass budget on gas just to get you to the festival?  Well the NKBMA feels your pain and can offer you all the great Bluegrass music, camping, jamming, great food and good friends all without breaking the bank on gas.  It’s hard to believe but  it is June already and we are ready for our annual Pickin’ For Memory Bluegrass festival in beautiful Sparta Kentucky.  If you have attended our festival in the past, you know that we have a beautiful location at the Sparta Campground which is right by the Sparta Speedway just 35 minutes from Florence.  For complete driving directions, jump on our website at nkbma.com.  Your NKBMA board members have been working hard in planning this years festival and have come up with a great band lineup for your listening pleasure.   Just to let you know, I, Steve McCain, cub reporter for the Northern Grass has a scoop on one of the best Bluegrass bands in the business and they will be playing for us this year.  Who’s the band?  None other that Goldwing Express.  If you have had the pleasure of hearing this band in the past, you know they are top notch. Not only are they known nationally, they have shows that are played in music town Branson Missouri. Goldwing Express was one of my first Bluegrass memories. They played one of the first festivals that my dad and I attended years ago. They were great then and even better now. They put on a great show and I know you won’t be disappointed.  But the fun does not end there!  We have a weekend filled with great bands!

We are starting off on Thursday with a number of our NKBMA member bands such as our old friends the Moron Brothers.  Always putting on a great show with good music and  stories that make you laugh. Licking Valley who has helped us out a number of times this year, Retread Bluegrass Band who has a featured story in this paper this month and I’m sure you will enjoy listening to and last but not least My Favorite Bluegrass Band….well besides being my favorite bluegrass band, that’s the name of their band as well and I’m sure they will go on your list of favorite bands as well.  Friday continues with another great line up such as Vernon McIntryre’s Appalachian Grass, Glen Richie, One Ioda, Kentucky Express, Daryl Winkelman  and ending with the Dixie Ryders.  A full day of some great music. We will end the festival with another full day of music on Saturday featuring Mark Poe and the All American Bluegrass Band, Dean Osborne, Higher Vision, Johnny Browning, The James Family, Crossroads, Friends In Bluegrass and of coarse Goldwing Express.  I can’t wait, I get excited just writing about it!  As always, we have a lot of vendors there for your eating enjoyment.  New this year, our friends from the Masonic Lodge #746 will have a booth serving hot buttered corn on the cob and drinks. We will also have the festival staples such as ice cream, Hawaiian Ice, funnel cakes, hamburgers and hot dogs and much more.  Now if your not in the mood for a festival, you never will be!  We hope you come out and support the NKBMA and the Alzheimer’s Association. It will be a weekend you won’t soon forget!
